CIVIL WAR HERO !!

2nd Battle of Bull Run

BATTLE OF SECOND BULL RUN

This picture is probably some what similar to what my Great Grandfather went through when he was wounded and taken prisoner, Click HERE to read his story about this battle. Then click your BACK on your browser to come back here.

How do you determine if someone is a hero or not? Based upon what little I know of the history of the civil war, I believe that anyone who took part in the civil war on either side, for what ever reason, were all heros. Therefore, to me anyway, my great grandfather was a hero.

Since writing is not my main suit, I am dedicating this webpage to my great grandfather as a memorial to him for the inspiration for me to do this. I have just taken up learning the HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). His story inspired me to get it on the web for others to enjoy.

So, first you probably are wondering about the name Hamblin/Hamlin, if you don't already know. Well, the facts are a little sketchy, But when he enlisted in the Infantry in 1861 his name was Hamblin and was the same when he was discharged in 1863.

We suspect that when he enrolled with the New York 1st Veteran Cavalry in September 1863 they made a mistake and left the B out of his name and when it came time to get paid he had to sign without the B. Supposedly, when living in Hyde county South Dakota he had his name legally changed to Hamlin. However, I have no proof of this and some things disprove it.

My sister in Highmore, SD has both his discharge papers. I read information in the National Archives that there was only one copy of a soldiers discharge and that was given to the soldier. When he was discharged in May 1863 his name was Hamblin. When he was discharged in July 1865 his name was Hamlin.

Information I recieved from the state of New York listed him the other way around. Hamlin when in the first time Hamblin the second time. I would consider this a mistake in their records, since the discharge papers are more than likely correct.

I sent for and recieved papers from the National Archives from his pension records. I sent 2 requests each the same except for the B in the name on one. They sent back the one with Hamlin saying it was a duplicate request. I have since sent another request (takes about 3 months to get any reply) asking for military records for Hamlin in the 1st Veteran Cavalry. I am still waiting for this.

I don't like scrolling through long documents so I thought when I set this up I would use several different pages instead of one long one. The following are some links to pages I think are of interest. After going there just click your browser BACK to come back here.
